To program most garage door remotes, press the learn button on the opener motor head, then within 30 seconds press the button on your remote. The opener lights usually flash to confirm it paired.
Programming a remote, step by step
- Find the learn button on the opener motor head, usually near the antenna wire, often under a light cover.
- Press and release the learn button. An indicator light turns on for about 30 seconds.
- Within those 30 seconds, press the button on your remote once or twice until the opener lights flash.
- Test the remote. If the door responds, it is paired.
Programming a keypad
For a wireless keypad, enter a new PIN you choose, press the keypad enter button, then press the learn button on the opener and the enter button again. Brands differ slightly, so check the steps for your LiftMaster, Genie or Chamberlain unit.
If it will not pair
If the remote will not program, the battery may be weak, you may have missed the 30 second window, or the opener receiver may need service. Our remote and keypad service can sort it out.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the learn button on my opener?
It is on the motor head, usually near the hanging antenna wire and often under or behind the light cover. It may be labeled learn or smart.
Why won’t my garage door remote program?
Common reasons are a weak remote battery, missing the 30 second learn window, or a fault in the opener receiver. Try a fresh battery and repeat the steps.
